CALLING ALL CHEFS & FOODIES!

Chefs, cooks, students and culinary enthusiasts of Philippine dishes are invited to participate in a Philippine culinary competition.  The Kulinarya: A Filipino Culinary Showdown, is divided into two competition divisions:  Professional and Amateur.  The contest is open to Northern California residents at least 18 years of age.  Professionals are those who have professional culinary training and/or have worked as a chef/cook in the food service industry while the Amateurs are self-taught home cooks and foodies who have passion for cooking Filipino dishes but have not been gainfully employed as chefs or cooks in the food service industry. The competition will be staged in two rounds.  

         SEMI-FINALS:  August 15th, 10am to 5pm.  SoMa Room, Metreon

                                    Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission St., San Francisco, CA

                                    (In conjunction with the Pistahan Parade and Festival)

Each contestant will only submit one recipe from the following entrees:  Kare-Kare, Escabeche, Caldereta, Menudo, Sisig, Afritada and Pochero. Together with the recipe of his entry, the contestant shall submit his short bio or credentials no later than August 10, 2010 to the Philippine Tourism Office, Philippine Consulate General located at 447 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94108.  Accompanying photos or videos of the preparation or cooked entry dish are also strongly recommended.  One entry per contestant is permitted. 

Six (6) entries in each division shall be selected prior to the Semi-Final Round.  They will be notified to bring their cooked dish at the Semi-Final Round to be held on August 15th, 2010 at the SOMA Room, 2nd Floor, Metreon at Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission Street corner 4th Street in San Francisco.  A panel of judges will taste and judge the entries during the Semi-Final Round according to the following criteriataste, creativity, and presentation.   

         FINALS :  October 24th, 10am to 5pm.  City View, Metreon

                            Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission St., San Francisco, CA

                            (In celebration of Filipino-American History Month)

The three (3) winners in each division (Professional & Amateur) at the Semi-Final Round shall go to the Final Round and do actual cooking onsite in three categories.  These are :

    Soup or Appetizer      :    (i.e. Filipino Lumpia, Ukoy, Kilawin, Bulalo, Sinigang and Tinola)

    Entrees                    :    Adobo and the winning dish at the Semi-Final Round

    Filipino Style Dessert  :    (Halo-halo, Buko con Seta, kakanin, etc.)

The grand winner in each competition division will receive a round trip ticket to the Philippines with a tour to Philippine culinary destinations, gift certificates and other prizes

The Kulinarya : A Filipino Culinary Showdown is proudly presented by the Philippine Consulate General, and its attached agencies: Department of Tourism, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Philippine National Police, and with the support of Filipino American Arts Exposition.  It aims to elevate the consciousness and appreciation of Northern California residents on Philippine cuisine, and to further improve the quality of taste and presentation of Filipino dishes through a competition among chefs, students and culinary enthusiasts.
